Epistasis is the phenomenon that a mutation in a gene or amino acid sequence modifies the effect of another mutation in the same sequence. Since this phenomenon limits the viable evolutionary paths between sequences, it can serve as an important tool in studying evolution and reconstructing evolutionary trajectories. However, due to its combinatorial complexity – originating from the vast amount of possible mutation orders – full studies on its structure and extension is scarce. In the present talk I shell overview some recent advances on protein language model based machine learning techniques along with experimental results.
